今から１２６０余年前の天平１６年（７４４）に、聖武天皇の勅令により東国鎮守の祈願寺として、高僧行基菩薩により開山されました。薬王院の名は創建当初、薬師如来をご本尊とした事に由来します。現在は真言宗智山派の大本山として「成田山新勝寺」「川崎大師平間寺」「高尾山薬王院」が三大本山として知られております。 This temple was built in 744, some 1260 years ago, by the high priest Gyoki Bodhisattva, under the order of Emperor Shomu, as a protector temple of the nation's eastern region. The name Takaosan Yakuoin Temple originates with the fact that Yakuoin (Medicine Buddha) was the original deity of the temple. At present, the three main temples of the Shingon Chisan sect are: Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, Kawasaki Daishi Temple, and Takaosan Yakuoin Temple.
