Where Japanese Nautical Charts and Hydrographic Surveys Commenced

船舶が安全に航海するため海図の整備が急務と考え、兵部省海軍部水路局を現在の中央区築地に創設、外国人に頼らず独力で海洋調査を行って日本国として初めて海図を作製。現在、業務は海上保安庁海洋情報部に引き継がれ続けられています。平成23（2011）年、海洋情報部は移転しましたが、この地を発祥の地として後世に伝えています。【Birth Year】1871 For maritime trade and national defense, it is crucially important to have nautical charts of harbors and coastal waters, which represent indispensable information for safe navigation including water depths and navi gational aids. In light of this, the Japanese government established the Navy Hydrographic Office here in 1871. The Office conducted hydrographic surveys and published the first Japanese nautical chart without support from foreign countries. Recently, these activities have been taken up and continued by the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Dept., Japan Coast Guard. In 2011, the dept. was moved , however, this plaque remains as to commemorate the place where Japanese nautical charts and hydrographic surveys commenced.
