The town of Hachioji was long known as a center of silkworm cultivation and silk textiles, earning it the name Kuwato or "City of Mulberries." Tama textiles, which fall under Hachioji textiles, were named a national traditional craft in 1980. They were also named part of the Japan Heritage "Mysterious Mt.
